I mean it was just like this pursuit of truth, this nerd truth. When Naderi was at USCD, she was able to wield her voice with freedom and was encouraged to speak up and be curious. As she transitioned from an entrepreneurial setting to a corporate environment at Qualcomm, she realized quickly how the way she communicated needed to be carefully crafted as to not step on professional toes. Working at the corporate level gave her an entire new set of resources in the form of co-workers and dedicated teams.
Naderi needed to change how she listened in order to find the best way to reach them. Listen before speaking. Listening allows you to gain more insight and information— every fact that you learn, every new idea, every critical remark or praise has the ability to enhance your voice. One of the most poignant lessons that Naderi learned while making the leap from being an entrepreneur to her new corporate position at Qualcomm was how to preface her ideas. This is a way of anticipating a reaction, and actively listening for an answer before interrupting with a question.
She has learned that her voice is important and that people are more inclined to listen when she presents her ideas as suggestions instead of dictations. Open communication makes her more approachable in the world of collaboration. When colleagues and coworkers feel intimidated, they shut down. This can rob the project of valuable ideas.
WHEN SILENCE SPEAKS
Near the beginning of her time there, Naderi made the mistake of interrupting a colleague who was speaking. This is an example of poor listening, and it can cost progress, time, and productive working relationships. That simple statement has a profound meaning when applied in a general sense, and resonates throughout every level of professional communication. Owning your voice as an entrepreneur can mean that you need to be loud enough to be heard above competitive ideas.
Coming off as aggressive, too direct, or uncaring defeats your purpose, and can ultimately cause your voice to lose value over time.
